The Preserve is a scientific facility located in Nebraska run by Douglas Abbot. The facility is a fabled safe haven told among the hybrids of the world that offers sanctuary in their plight. In truth, it is a clinical testing laboratory that created and performed experiments on human-animal hybrid children to try to find a cure for a mysterious plague that has afflicted humanity.

In the Netflix series, the name is not a ruse; the Preserve actually is a safe haven for hybrid children, founded by Aimee in a defunct zoo in Essex City. Near the end of the first season however, the Last Men took over the Preserve and captured the hybrid children living there in order to perform experiments on them in search of a cure for the Sick. Following the Last Men's invasion, they made the Preserve their new headquarters. Back in Red Rocks, Gus, who was unaware of the Last Men's invasion, contacted the Preserve in hopes of meeting other children like him. The Last Men soon arrived to capture Gus, shooting Jepperd in the chest and placing Gus in a cage. Gus was escorted to the now enemy-controlled Preserve where he was placed in a barn alongside the other hybrids.
